In Flames, a film by Zarrar Kahn and Anam Abbas, has been officially submitted for this year's Oscar consideration by the Pakistani Academy Selection Committee (PASC).
The International Feature Oscar is being considered for the psychological suspenseful film. This year, John and In Flames were the final two options.
The film's plot takes place in Karachi and had its world premiere at the Cannes Directors' Fortnight earlier this year. A mother's and her daughter's frail lives is upended by both real and spectral beings from their past after the death of their family patriarch. Their relationship turns into their only line of defence against the menacing evil powers.

Shant Joshi, Todd Brown, and Maxime Cottray served as executive producers alongside Abbas, who produced the film. The movie is shown in New Visions at XYZ.
In a statement, PASC Chairperson Mohammed Ali Naqvi said, "As the chair of the Pakistani Academy Selection Committee, it is with immense pride and a deep sense of responsibility that we select and submit In Flames as Pakistan's official entry for the International Feature category at the 96th Academy Awards."
This choice not only highlights the movie's genius but also represents a turning point in the history of Pakistani filmmaking. The film In Flames is proof of Pakistani cinema's limitless potential on the international scene.
"I'm incredibly honoured that Pakistan's Oscar committee has recognised our film. We are currently distributing the movie ourselves in Pakistan since, even with the local censor board's approval, local distributors thought it was too contentious.
so we're working on it locally. We're really happy to be able to screen the movie in the location where it was filmed because Pakistani viewers have responded so well to it, Kahn said.

Throughout the extraordinary year of international film, In Flames has received praise from Cannes, TIFF, Sitges, Busan, and the Red Sea among other film festivals.
"In Flames exposes the brutality of patriarchy and the strength of community, serving as an urgent call to action. It gives comfort to the downtrodden and reassures them that hope never dies in the divided world of today.
Among the PASC jury this year are Director Bilal Lashari, actress Fawad Khan, activist and author Fatima Bhutto, actor Haya Fatima Iqbal, filmmaker Madeeha Syed, director Mehreen Jabbar, actor Nadia Afgan, and director Saim Sadiq are among the members of this year's PASC jury.
